ICF NJ Strategic Partner Interview

Caliper Corp - Ricardo Roman, Director of
Association Management

Interviewed by Supriya Desai, Sponsorship Director

"People are successful when they play to their strengths." - Herb Greenberg, Caliper Founder

That's the quote I heard repeatedly from Rick Roman as I interviewed him for this profile. It's what brought him to Caliper in 2002 and what has intrigued him about the Caliper Profile and assessment tools ever since.

Today we take a moment to get to know one of ICF New Jersey's most loyal corporate sponsors, Caliper Corp. In short, Caliper is in the business of supporting human capital "from selection to succession and everything in between" - hiring, offering competency-based training, promotions and development of professionals. As a global leader in the field of assessments, they have been a sponsor of the New Jersey Charter Chapter of ICF for so long that they've become a strategic partner that continues to bring a significant amount of value to our members.

In addition to sharing meeting space at their headquarters for the Princeton Community Group over the last several years, Caliper was a Silver Sponsor of our 20th anniversary gala in September 2018 and they have recently presented their Caliper Profile research-based assessment tool at a professional development event.

According to Rick, professional coaches use the Caliper Profile and assessment tools because they know they are best-in-class and continuously validated through real data.

Who is Rick?

Rick has a different profile compared to other folks at Caliper. He's not from HR, and he's also not a psychologist by training. In his previous life, he had a top-secret position with the United States Air Force and lived in North Carolina. He wanted, however, to return to New Jersey with his family and find something meaningful to do while doing so. Then, in 2002, he met Herb Greenberg, the Founder of Caliper, and the rest is history. He has been with the company ever since. In his current role, he develops relationships with industry associations and their members making him a friend of the International Coach Federation and ICF New Jersey for many years.

I asked Rick what message he has for coaches. Rick said: Because the Caliper Profile assesses all the way down to attributes, not just competencies and behaviors, it can help individuals in a very personal way. Allowing coaches to dig deep into the why and how.

All of this helps coaches serve their clients more effectively in their growth journey.

Rick raised the point that Herb Greenberg's quote about playing to one's strengths is especially relevant in today's business world, where leaders are increasingly being asked to incorporate coaching into their leadership style. The Caliper Profile helps those leaders understand their team members' strengths in a more meaningful way so these leader-coaches can be more effective.

As we wrapped up our conversation, I asked Rick what he loved about Caliper and here's what he said: The Caliper Profile is still valid today, after 50 years. The approach really considers your potential and invites you to know your strengths and play to them. The Caliper Profile enables you to become more of who you are. That is the theme of Caliper and what Herb's vision was about. And it's clearly what Rick Roman believes in at his core.
